Athina Panotopoulou

I am a PhD student in the Computer Science department at Dartmouth College. Starting from Fall 2017 I am a visiting scholar at BU where I work under the guidance of my PhD advisor Emily Whiting.

I was born and lived in Athens where I received my B.S. in Informatics at the Athens University of Economics and Business. During Fall 2015 I was an Intern at Autodesk Research in Toronto.

Watercolor Woodblock Printing with Image Analysis

Athina Panotopoulou, Sylvain Paris and Emily Whiting

We introduce an image analysis pipeline and a fabrication process to design and fabricate watercolor prototypes for any given photograph.

Scaffolding a Skeleton

Athina Panotopoulou, Elissa Ross, Kathrin Welker, Evelyne Hubert and Géraldine Morin

The goal is to construct a quadrilateral mesh around a one-dimensional skeleton that is as coarse as possible, the “scaffold”. We provide a constructive algorithm to derive a quad-mesh scaffold with topologically regular crosssections, and no T-junctions.

Printone: Interactive Resonance Simulation for Free-form Print-wind Instrument Design

Nobuyuki Umetani, Athina Panotopoulou, Ryan Schmidt, Emily Whiting

Our interface provides interactive sound simulation feedback as the user edits, allowing exploration of freeform original wind instrument designs, which can be fabricated using a 3D printer.

Perceptual models of preference in 3D printing direction

Xiaoting Zhang, Xinyi Le, Athina Panotopoulou, Emily Whiting, Charlie C. L. Whang

A method to find printing directions that avoid placing supports in perceptually significant regions. Our model for preference in 3D printing direction is formulated as a combination of metrics including area of support, visual saliency, preferred viewpoint and smoothness preservation.
