Subject: Re: German "lute/guitar"

There was an interesting article by Kurt Rottmann in the 1979 LSA Journal
about these "lutars," as he calls them. The Wandervogel movement dates back
to around 1900 with students wanting to live a more "natural" life by
"wandering" around the countryside soaking up the local folklore. It was
disrupted by World War I, but came back with renewed vigor in the 1920s.
While Rottmann states that their activities "created more misunderstanding
than progress," it eventually did lead to an interest in the genuine article.
