Environmental modeling does this too: typical episodal studies are 15-90 days of generating hourly archived time steps for 40-60 variables on perhaps a 50-100-row by 50-100-column by 25-level 3D grid (between a couple of hundred MB and a bit over a GB per day of simulation). Presently we have to "chunk" the episodes into 3-5-day pieces in order to fit into available disk space and to do analysis after the fact on workstations. (We *never* have the dedicated machines some of you folks seem to--so we are always confined to a small portion of the available resources.
