In addition to running these applications on multiple processors, the parallelization of I/O operations and the use of multiple disk drives are required for achieving high system performance. This research is concerned with the effective management of parallel I/O by using appropriate I/O scheduling strategies. Based on a simulation model the performance of a number of scheduling policies are investigated. Using I/O characteristics of jobs such as the total outstanding I/O demand is observed to be useful in devising effective scheduling strategies.} }
