Brief Bio

I am an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth College and co-founder of the Visual Computing Lab. Before coming to Dartmouth, I was a Senior Research Scientist heading the rendering group at Disney Research Zürich, and an adjunct lecturer at ETH Zürich. I obtained my Ph.D. (2008) and M.S. (2005) in computer graphics from UC San Diego, and a B.S. (2003) in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.

Research Summary

My research in computer graphics is concerned with capturing, simulating, manipulating, and physically realizing how light interacts with its environment. In effect, I strive to understand why things look the way they do, how we can simulate their interaction with light efficiently, how we can intuitively author or edit that appearance, and how we can create physical objects with control over their appearance. My work in these areas has been incorporated into production rendering systems and has been used in the making of feature films, including Disney's Tangled, Frozen, and Big Hero 6. In 2013, I received the Eurographics Young Researcher Award and in 2019 the NSF CAREER Award.

Some overlapping focus areas include:

...

Light transport simulation

One of the core challenges in rendering is accurately simulating how light gets transported between surfaces and within volumes. I have been working to eliminate the point-centric legacy of volume light transport algorithms by reformulating them over higher-dimensional samples such as light path segments instead of path vertices. This lead to the development of the beam radiance estimate, photon beams, virtual ray light, joint path importance sampling, and higher-dimensional samples like "photon planes".

...

Monte Carlo sampling

Intelligent sampling techniques are crucial for making Monte Carlo methods more efficient. I have developed practical techniques to importance sample the product of lighting and shading when these factors are expressed as combinations of wavelets or spherical harmonics. This extends to higher-dimensional sampling problems, like adaptive sampling for distribution effects like motion blur or depth of field, or product importance sampling across several path vertices in volumetric path tracing. Often, different sampling strategies are combined in practice, and we are now gaining a better understanding of their interacting effect on variance.

...

Appearance capture

We have been working to create novel measurement devices for capturing complex appearance from the real world. For instance, we have developed a complete system for capturing both the geometry and appearance of a person’s hairstyle, as well as a method to measure, edit, and fabricate subsurface scattering of translucent materials.

...

Gradient, variance & error analysis

Theoretical analyses of light transport can provide valuable insights for developing more efficient rendering algorithms. Analyzing the gradient behavior of lighting & shadow allowed us to better quantify and control error in progressive photon mapping or enable higher-quality sparse sampling in (ir)radiance caching on surfaces and in volumes. Performing these analyses in a lower-dimensional setting can often provide valuable insights in a conceptually and computationally simplified setting.

...

Artistic authoring, editing & stylization

Efficient rendering is only of limited use without a way to intuitively author, dictate and manipulate the resulting visual appearance. Unfortunately, the space of physical parameters leading to visual appearance is often very complex and difficult to predict. We have developed artistic authoring metaphors to make volumetric lighting more intuitive for animated feature production, and also looked into perceptually meaningful ways to navigate the space of translucent material appearance. Beyond 3D rendering, we have looked into authoring tools for more expressive vector drawing using diffusion curves.

...

Fabrication

We are also bringing (inverse) rendering techniques into the real world by designing physical objects which interact with light in novel and carefully prescribed ways. We have investigated ways to design and fabricate specular materials that: refract incident light to create caustics in the form of prescribed images; use optimized layered attenuator patterns to cast prescribed color shadows when illuminated from different directions; or use refraction to optically decode hidden messages when placed over random or structured images. We have also developed an approach to accurately measure, edit, and physically reproduce the visual appearance of translucent materials such as skin or food.

Hobbies & Miscellaneous

When I can find the spare time I enjoy hiking and photography. In a previous life I enjoyed creating 3D models and animations (some of which you can find in the gallery section), primarily using Lightwave 3D.

You can also find some old material below, which I keep mostly for archival purposes:
